This all depends on your needs. All types of slings have their own strengths and you may wish to own one of each type, but to get you started here are some factors to consider.
1. How old your baby is
If you have a newborn or a younger baby then you may consider a pouch, ring sling or a stretchy wrap. These slings are especially good for breastfeeding, allowing for ‘hands-free’ breastfeeding and also discrete feeding in public. An older baby can be carried in these slings, but you might find that they prefer the structured soft carriers, and traditional soft carriers (like the Mei Tai carrier) are suitable for both.
2. When you might be using your sling?
If you are looking for a sling to wear when breastfeeding (for hands free feeding or for more discrete feeding away from home) you may wish to consider a pouch or ring sling. For those looking for a sling to use ‘on the go’ you may prefer a pouch as they are the quickest of all and take up no room in your bag. Soft carriers are excellent for spreading weight so if you are planning to use your carrier for long walks then this might be the type for you. Wraps are the most versatile sling, so if you want variety, chose a wrap!
3. How your baby prefers to be held or carried?
If your baby likes to be held upright, or has colic, then soft carriers and wraps would be a good choice for you. If your baby prefers to be cradled then you may wish to consider a pouch or a ring sling.
4. How you prefer to carry your baby
Similarly if you prefer to hold your baby in a certain way then this should influence your choice, as you have to be comfortable to! If you suffer from any back or shoulder pain then you may wish to consider a wrap or a soft carrier that is excellent at distributing the weight of your baby.
5. Ease of use
Once you have mastered how to wear your sling all are easy to use, but it is true that some carriers involve a little more practise than others. The easiest to master are the pouches, ring slings and soft carriers.
